Summary

Hampta Pass Trek stands as one of the most geographically diverse trekking experiences in the Indian Himalayas. Connecting the lush, verdant valleys of Kullu with the stark, high-altitude desert of Lahaul, this five-day journey offers a profound spectacle of shifting landscapes. At a maximum altitude of 4,310 meters, it provides an accessible yet thrilling challenge for both novice and seasoned trekkers seeking to witness the raw beauty of Himachal Pradesh.

Trek begins with a scenic drive from Manali to Jobri, followed by a gentle ascent to Cheeka. This initial phase immerses trekkers in dense forests of oak, maple and deodar. As the trail progresses toward Balu ka Gera, the scenery transforms into expansive meadows dotted with wildflowers and framed by the towering peaks of the Pir Panjal range.

The defining moment of the trek occurs on Day 3, as you navigate the steep ascent to the Hampta Pass summit. Standing at the crest, the contrast is staggering: behind you lies the vibrant greenery of the Kullu Valley, while ahead stretches the rugged, moon-like terrain of the Spiti Valley. The descent leads to Shea Goru, a serene campsite nestled by a glacial stream, offering a peaceful retreat after the day’s arduous climb.

A unique highlight of the Hampta Pass itinerary is the excursion to Chandratal (The Moon Lake). After descending to Chatru, trekkers are driven to this high-altitude marvel. Situated at 4,300 meters, the lake is renowned for its crystalline turquoise waters that reflect the surrounding snow-capped peaks. This visit provides a perfect spiritual and visual crescendo to the trek before the final return drive to Manali via the iconic Atal Tunnel or Rohtang Pass.
