Summary

Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and spiritually rewarding high-altitude adventures in the Nepalese Himalayas. Circling the world's seventh-highest peak, Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), this trek is designed for trekkers seeking true wilderness, high-pass crossings and a dramatic shift from subtropical forests to glacial moonscapes.

This 13-day itinerary offers a sophisticated blend of logistical precision and raw Himalayan intensity, making it a ‘bucket list’ journey for elite mountain enthusiasts.

This journey begins in lakeside haven of Pokhra, where team assembles for final preparations. A rugged 135 km drive takes you to Naura Village, gateway to Myagdi River valley. This transition from city to remote Himalayan foothills sets stage for a rapid ascent into one of the least-trodden trekking corridors in Nepal.

Initial trekking phase (Days 3–5) follows Myagdi Khola through lush terraced fields and dense bamboo forests. Starting from Bogara (2,080 m), trail gains steady elevation through Dovan (2,520 m) and Sallagadi (2,820 m). This segment is vital for physical conditioning, as terrain begins to steepen and air grows noticeably thinner. Accommodations in traditional tea houses provide a rare, intimate look at rugged lifestyle of the high-altitude villagers.

As greenery fades, landscape shifts into a dramatic alpine desert. Between 3,660 m (Italian Base Camp) and 4,748 m (Dhaulagiri Base Camp), trekkers navigate the massive Chonbarden Glacier.

Technical core of this trek occurs on Day 9 and Day 10. Crossing the French Pass (5,360 m) is a grueling but transcendent experience, offering a 360-degree vista of Mukut Himal and Dhaulagiri range. From here, trail descends into the Hidden Valley (5,100 m)—a high-altitude sanctuary that feels worlds away from civilization.

Final major hurdle is Thapa Pass (5,244 m), followed by a long, demanding descent of 15 km to Yak Kharka (3,680 m). This stretch tests limits of endurance but rewards the trekker with unmatched Himalayan solitude.

This trek concludes with a descent into Apple Capital of Nepal—Marfa. After a short trek from Yak Kharka, landscape shifts again to arid, Tibetan-style terrain of Lower Mustang region. A reserve day is strategically placed to account for unpredictable weather of high passes, ensuring safety and success. This trek ends with a scenic drive back to Pokhra, completing one of the most formidable circuits in the trekking world.
