Summary

Nestled within Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarakhand, Chopta Chandrashila Trek stands as one of India's most captivating short-duration adventures. Often referred to as “Mini Switzerland of India,” this trek offers a perfect blend of high-altitude thrill, spiritual serenity and panoramic Himalayan vistas, making it an ideal choice for both novice trekkers and seasoned explorers looking for a quick mountain fix.

This trek begins with a scenic 202 km drive from Rishikesh to basecamp at Chopta. This 8-hour journey winds along the holy Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, passing through iconic confluences like Devprayag and Rudraprayag. Arriving at an altitude of 2,012 m, crisp mountain air and sight of sprawling meadows (bugyals) immediately set tone for adventure ahead.

Centerpiece of this trek occurs on second day—a steady ascent to the highest Shiva temple in the world, Tungnath, followed by a final climb to Chandrashila Summit (4,130 m).

·      Ascent: 8 km round-trip trek navigates through dense rhododendron and oak forests, which burst into shades of crimson and pink during spring.

·      Reward: From summit, trekkers are treated to a 360-degree theater of Himalayan giants, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba and Kedar Dome.

Final day transitions from rugged peaks to tranquil shores of Deoriatal. After a short drive to Sari village, a brisk 3 km uphill trek leads to this emerald-colored lake. Situated at 2,438 m, Deoriatal is famous for its crystal-clear reflections of the Chaukhamba Range on its still surface. It provides a peaceful conclusion to the trek, allowing hikers to explore lush valley and soak in stillness of wilderness before the return drive to Rishikesh.
